We were together in high school. Michael Red: The family, I know, that's big for you in that culture and what you try to create as a culture is family. It's kind of like the joy of, like I said, I was a rough athlete compared to the Olympian and All-Star I'm talking to. It is so important that kind of at least in our infrastructure. Peter: So my ring sits in my underwear drawer in our house which is like, great and its got readily accessibleI mean its huge. I watch it. Its not really in a place where I could tell you, like, hey, heres our growth potential. Peter Feigin: I mean, my mouth just watered. How do we build the plumbing? Is this coming? A billionaire? By the way, its so much fun. "You will be in a business meeting on Monday with one of the 300-500 business executives in the town and you will see them some place later that week or the week after, unlike in New York City," he says. That was, Peter: That was it. It was July. But that kind of thing. Thanks for listening. So, of course, he's just had enough. And to think it all started at a private school in New York City. Peter Feigin: Yeah. Peter Feigin: Hey, John thanks for having me. Michael Red: You talked about Coach Bud and the whole team organization, which I think Coach Bud has done a terrific job thus far. Its incredible and not many people get to do it, lets be honest, when you get to actually live your dream and go to the top. Its been talked about the whole Giannis effect. So, we stopped having basketball games and we stopped having concerts and we stopped. We thought we were a progressive, pretty forward thinking organization. Our dinner table conversation. Michael Red: And this was a decade long process, Peter? Kevin Draughon, a former student at Trevor Day School, drove on Dan Feigin, who runs the pickup games on Saturdays at the schools gym. Kevin Draughon, who participates in the games, sat with Dylan Feigin and her brother, Jackson. It found him. I had this tendency, which I still do, to get so excited and loud. Feigin can do all the PR he wants, but the most effective pitch to get fans into the new arena is out of his hands. Like the Kees, you're going to hopefully be doing something you love with people you love and working your butt off, but there are expectations. You talk about advantages, just the osmosis at our dinner table was I knew in two seconds like I wanted to be in business. In a perfect world, how do we mesh them together to have one and one equal three? . Not only do you have to have the best facilities, the best resources, no reason for anybody to say, What want to be, you got to be good people. We've made it really authentic and localized with what our food and beverage offerings are going to be. This is all a good launch point for Feigin to introduce a state-of-the-art arena. I'm so proud of him and the team and the roster. It was one of these terrible times where, when youre in pro sport, you book all your revenue, you do all your dirty business before tip-off and if they didnt have somebody to run the business in July, it wouldve been a disaster and they were stuck with me and thats my road to success. I dont know if thats a word, but I would attach myself. Search Peter Feigin: And I'm digging into the business, and I had no desire to run it or to move to Milwaukee. Talk about the steps leading up to pulling off, living the dream, actually winning the championship. As a subscriber, you have 10 gift articles to give each month. And we're going to be the No. He's bigger, Giannis is even outside of the country than he is inside of it. Peter Feigin: No. This was just the very beginning, the first thought was, "Oh, boy. Because I don't think we're really worried about kind of like we would think half a million people are going to die, that what would happen to hospitals and ICUs and things like that. We've gotten through conversations. Were going to constantly improve. I encourage it, and selfishly, its a fun way to network and deal with people. I said, "Man, make sure you represent." Don't talk to me, don't text me, don't come back unless you give me a pair of All-Star socks. It has just been introduced for iPhones, but we are working on the Android version! People who do argue are kind of not allowed back.. Its a difference maker, especially now in our labor market. Can you keep a competitive championship-caliber team across an era? And the Milwaukee Bucks players were the catalyst for that to happen in a big way. We've got one of the global sports stars in the world. Peter Feigin: Well, I think, like you talked about the opportunity for a great historic organization like this to embrace a former Olympian, it's all-star, like a person who's current in the game and really is an asset. You buy the Bucks, you help with that whole negotiation and you were living in New York, so you were married already and you decided. This guy is a relentless workaholic who is selfless to his teammates and like wants to win. Right? John: Go back over that, what it was called typically whats called web3 now, or something the young people around me tell me its called web 3.0 NFTs, crypto sports gambling. This again becomes a platform of an NBA brand extension that just explodes with engagement. Talk about that as far as the league and the individual teams. Feigin is in charge of divvying up the five-man teams at the start of the session and typically includes himself on the strongest squad. The arena is Feigin's baby, and he's almost ready to show it off, as doors will open next season. We've developed about 75% of it and people are living here, working here, and playing. This was the Milwaukee Bucks at the time had lost the most games in the NBA, had the least revenue, had the least season ticket holders, any metric you could measure. Peter Feigin: Khris Middleton, as you can imagine, nobody understands that players have been having to get COVID tested twice a day and you got to come into our training center and we have parking spaces. Peter Feigin: I think nobody could have imagined what that does to you on a personal psychological emotional level. And if a new player does not endear himself to the group, it tends to reflect poorly on whoever invited him in the first place. Peter Feigin, the president of the Milwaukee Bucks, playing defense. Michael Red: It's becoming that and has become that. In 2014, Bucks President Peter Feigin lost his father to congestive heart failure. The whole world is on that balance, so part of what we haven't really talked about much is our culture here. Being able to play ball with your son is kind of like the best of the best, Peter Feigin said. Players, for 50 nights a year, land at 1:00 or 2:00 in the morning to get home and kind of do what the time balance is. I always joke that we could run a country, dAmboise said. Peter Feigin didn't go looking for his job as president of the Milwaukee Bucks. And so, talk about that and your leadership style, generosity and how important it is to give back. My fantasy, I had two fantasies growing up. Hes with us today. Above me there are my two children, my son, Tyler, my daughter, Courtney. Id been in a big market. Peter is a serious businessman and an hilarious friend. Talk a little bit on a fun topic, when I was reading up about you and the team and everything else, I read about this new venture you guys got going over in Wisconsin called the Cluckery and I got hungry looking at the website and looking at the menu. John: You grew up on the Upper East Side, you are a native New Yorker, your brothers still back there. Now youre there, youre rebuilding. Why shouldn't we resemble the city we work and live in, instead of kind of what national things are? Youre going to have a lot of fun. Peter Feigin: Listen. When you are visioning this out, like you just said, human capital, a new physical capital, on the court, off the court, what were you using both singularly as you, as Peter Feigin goes, but also with your partners and the private equity guys, what were you using as your role model? So, the end of the story is I was responsible to hire CEO, so I got two or three candidates I knew Mark and Wes would hate and they couldn't hire them because they didn't like something about them. We're going to develop some residential and we'll hopefully have a great commercial tenant and we continue to build. And that is one of the best ways to summarize Peter's spirit. Even though you're at the World of Disney, even Disney after about 10 days, you're ready to get out of Disney no matter where you are. Peter Feigin: So I think we have that balance. Peter Feigin: Well, long story short, like, six years ago, he calls me and he says, "Hey, can you get to Milwaukee to go meet with Senator Kohl. Now you win, you have the championship. Defenders are responsible for calling fouls. Talk about all the nuances and the dynamics and the pressure was to lead through COVID. The first game goes to 9 points, and every game after that goes to 7. How could we not be good at quick serve restaurants? You and I go back since you came back to the Bucks or since you came to the Bucks and you guys have been incredible to me over the years since you've been in a position in Milwaukee and really grateful of our friendship over the years and how the organization has welcomed me back to the organization. John: It looks amazing. You miss throwing that pass. So, this had been a surreal year and tough as a leader because it's exhausting. He's Peter Feigin, president of the NBA's Milwaukee Bucks, and in the nearly five years of living in the city he has come to Gee's Clippers so that Gaulien Smith, a black man, can tame his head. So, you take away every form of a 20- to 30-year-old's life outside of basketball, you take away their family in a big way and by the way, then you isolate them, in basically like a stay at home kind of mode in the middle of a pandemic and really like social justice, kind of uprising while they're locked into a bubble. I mean, if I didn't have real responsibilities of a family and a wife, who actually says we need to live somewhere and stuff, I could get paid in gear. Id worked for the New York Knicks. You miss falling on the ground, Dan Feigin said. People can find it at, I saw the website, it was Cluckery, cluckery.com, right? So, we continue to want to make this a place where players are like, "Shit, I've never been treated like this.". I can't even imagine what these guys are going through.". John: Thats awesome. John: You talked about your Masters of the Universe being your partners and owners and really some of the brightest people on this planet which of course, thats true. That's like, that's today's kind of like, "What are we focused on?". But talk about that dynamic leading through that. And that's kind of like you do it with great people around you.
